Unique piece handmade by Desiree Deridder.

Material: Ceramic.

Desiree Deridder:

I use ceramics as my main language and painting in a complementary way. With my work I explore the relationship between nature and progress. I propose something like a rescue of the species of animals that are becoming extinct, posing a fictional instance of fellowship between the species.

I am interested in clay as a fundamental element. Clay as a concept that refers to an ancestral, noble, receptive and malleable material. It connotes nature, the telluric force that emerges from the earth and houses all forms of life. It also entails the link between the simple and the complex, insofar as it is versatile in the first stage of manipulation and becomes more complex in the successive steps. I am interested in the tension between strength and fragility of the material.

I consider my work as an alchemy that combines the initial idea with the spontaneous. I allow the same procedure to guide me without having everything so calculated a priori. I leave a margin for chance to intervene.

I present sets of pieces that I have as an installation, emphasizing the spatial aspect, so that it interacts with the environment, with lighting elements or special sounds, seeking to generate a narration with greater sensory power. I use solid forms as a pictorial support.

My latest works speak of the loss of habitat, indiscriminate felling, burning, the absence and exodus of the few animals that remain and are looking for a safe place.

Being a handcrafted product, it can vary in size, shapes and colors, but always respecting the quality it is presented and the usefulness for which it was designed.
